Water and Reflections – Public Art Project

This innovative exhibition at Himalaya gallery will feature artworks and collaborations between artists from Melbourne, Shanghai, Tokyo and Liverpool on the theme of the environmental and cultural significance of water in the cities of the Asia Pacific Region.

These cities all have important rivers running through them which have been a source of historical development, trade, and culture which the artworks in the exhibition will explore through video, sound, installation, photography, and public art. The Australian artists in this exhibition: Dominic Redfern, Simon Perry and Philip Samartzis are part of the Spatial Dialogues team which produced Drowned Worlds in Melbourne in 2012. For the last two years the team has also been in creative dialogue with Japanese artists such as Haco and artists from the Boat people association in Tokyo which resulted in Underground Streams- an exhibition held in a shipping container in central Tokyo-See: http://spatialdialogues.net/home/

In Water and Reflections at the Himalaya Gallery the Australian artists welcome the opportunity for artistic dialogues on water with Chinese artists such as Wang Zheng ,Hu Jieming and English artist Nicola Dale along with Ding Yi and his students from the Shanghai Institute of Visual art.

One of the themes of the Spatial Dialogues project is how the cities of our region are affected by global climate change, along with periods of drought or flood. The project also reveals the essential qualities of water in everyday urban life and its cultural importance to the life of cities in our region. Through this collaboration between artists and curators from Australia and China, the Spatial Dialogues team hopes to extend our shared understanding of water as a precious resource.

A public forum on the exhibition and the Australian Spatial Dialogues Project will be held on Monday December 9th and will include:
Shanghai Names here -Professor Wang Dawei, Ding Yi, Wong Shun-Kit ,Ling Min and artists Hu Jiemin and Wang Zheng
The Australian video artist Professor Dominic Redfern, and Australian cultural theorist Professor Linda Williams both from RMIT University in Melbourne
